Harvey Cheyne, the pampered son of an American railroad millionaire, falls from an ocean liner into the cold North Atlantic and is plucked from the swell by the crew of the We're Here, a Gloucester fishing schooner. Put to work among the dories, the nets, and the rolling Grand Banks, the insufferable boy is slowly remade: by labour, by the sea, and by the rough kindness of men who measure a person by what he can do.

Written during Kipling's American years and steeped in the talk of the Gloucester cod-fleet, Captains Courageous (1897) is the warmest of his novels and one of the great stories of the sea, a boy's coming-of-age told amid the gulls, the fog, and the salt.
