In a little Philadelphia shop, in the first summer of the Revolution, a young upholsterer named Elizabeth Ross, the widow of John Ross, is said to have sewn the first Stars and Stripes, and to have shown the committee how to cut a five-pointed star with a single snip of the scissors.

First told to the world in 1870 by her grandson William Canby, the story was gathered into this book by his brother George Canby and his nephew Lloyd Balderston and published in 1909, with the affidavits, the documents, and the flags themselves.

This Lightbound Library edition reprints their history complete through its four chapters, with all nine of the original illustrations: the Grand Union flag, the thirteen-star flag in its circle of stars, the star-cutting diagram, Betsy Ross's own signature, and C. H. Weisgerber's famous painting, The Birth of Our Nation's Flag.
