About this edition

Baba-Yaga, the bony-legged witch who rides the forest in an iron mortar, sweeping away her trail with a broom, is the most fearsome figure in all of Russian folklore.

This edition gathers six of her greatest wonder-tales: brave Vasilissa the Beautiful and her little wooden doll; the warrior queen Marya Morevna and the sorcerer Koschei the Deathless; the Frog-Tzarevna; the Feather of Finist the Falcon; and Tsarevich Ivan, the Firebird, and the Grey Wolf.

Drawn from the classic collections of Post Wheeler (Russian Wonder Tales, 1912) and Arthur Ransome (Old Peter’s Russian Tales, 1916), and illustrated in full colour throughout with original paintings by Jessica von Braun and the celebrated plates of Ivan Bilibin, the artist who defined how the world pictures Russian fairy tales.
