Little Diamond sleeps in a hay-loft above the horses, and one cold night a chink in the wall becomes a doorway, for the North Wind herself, a tall and beautiful lady whose hair streams out for miles, comes to carry him into the dark. Night after night she bears him over sleeping London and across the sea, until at last he passes through her very heart to the strange, still country at her back, where nothing is unkind.

First published in 1871, George MacDonald's novel is one of the tenderest and most haunting of Victorian fairy tales: a story of a good child, a mysterious wind-mother, and the thin place between this world and the next. MacDonald was a lodestar for C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, and this is among his best loved works.
