About this edition
Deep under the earth the root-children sleep the whole winter long. When Mother Earth calls them awake, they sew their bright spring clothes and are sent up, one by one, as the flowers and beetles and grasses of the year, until autumn's storms come round and send them home to bed again.
Sibylle von Olfers' Jugendstil classic of 1906 is one of the best-loved picture books in the German language, and it has never gone out of print there. It appears here with her own colour plates and her original verse, set beside a new English translation on the facing page, so a family can read it in either language or in both. A turning-of-the-seasons tale for the very young.
