About this edition

Every evening the young Fisherman drew his nets from the sea, and one evening he drew up a little Mermaid, sleeping. He let her go for the price of her singing, and loved her so wholly that he would give up his very soul to live with her beneath the waves. But a soul cannot be cast off lightly; and once cut loose it goes wandering the world alone, and comes back changed.

The Fisherman and His Soul (1891) is the lush, sorrowful jewel of Oscar Wilde's A House of Pomegranates, the closest literary cousin to Andersen's mermaid, and wholly Wilde's own. This Lightbound Library edition leads with it, and gathers behind it the three companion tales of the collection: The Young King, who dreams of the cost of his crown; The Birthday of the Infanta, and her small cruelty; and The Star-Child, brought low and made kind.

Set afresh in EB Garamond and Marcellus, with Wilde's own dedications kept, and bound behind an original watercolour.
