About this edition

Carol Bird is born on Christmas morning, a frail, radiant child who spends her short life making other people happy. For the Christmas she knows will be her last, she plans a feast for the nine boisterous Ruggles children in the shabby house next door, and pours her whole heart into one unforgettable day.

In the companion tale, the minister’s wife of snow bound Beulah paints a Christmas card from a neighbour’s lamplit window, and the little card drifts out into the world, healing an old family rift and calling two wandering sons home.

Kate Douglas Wiggin, the beloved author of Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, first published The Birds’ Christmas Carol in 1888 while pioneering free kindergartens in San Francisco. The Romance of a Christmas Card followed in 1916, late in her writing life. Together they hold everything her readers loved her for: New England warmth, gentle humour, and tenderness toward children and the poor. Both tales are complete in their original texts, bound behind an original painting.
