About this edition
First published in 1855, Maud is Alfred, Lord Tennyson's daring monodrama, a poem-sequence that follows a single feverish mind as it slides from bitter grief to rapturous love, from a fatal duel to madness and, at last, to war. Experimental and psychologically raw, it was the work Tennyson himself loved most and read aloud again and again.
This edition pairs the monodrama with two of the most famous public poems in the language: The Charge of the Light Brigade, with its immortal Into the valley of Death rode the six hundred, and the stately Ode on the Death of the Duke of Wellington. Together these classic Victorian poems show Tennyson as both the intimate poet of the tormented heart and the grand voice of a nation.
