About this edition

In the spring of 1819 John Keats wrote a short ballad of a knight-at-arms enthralled by a fairy's child and left to wander, alone and palely loitering, on the cold hill's side. Out of the same miraculous year came the great odes and the romance that stand beside it here.

This volume gathers La Belle Dame sans Merci with The Eve of St. Agnes, the odes of 1819, to a nightingale, on a Grecian urn, to autumn, and a garland of the sonnets: the essential Keats, in a single edition.

It is the exact companion to our Lamia, which holds the three narrative poems of the 1820 volume. The two together carry the whole of that book.
