About this edition

In 1697 Charles Perrault gathered the old nursery stories of France into literature, and gave the world the fairy tales it has told ever since. These are the original Tales of Mother Goose, the stories that shaped how we imagine glass slippers, pumpkin coaches and happily ever afters.

All eight of Perrault’s tales are here: Cinderella, Puss in Boots, The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood, Little Red Riding Hood, Bluebeard, Hop o’ My Thumb, Diamonds and Toads and Riquet with the Tuft, each closing with the sharp little moral he wrote for it.

Cinderella leads the way: the cinder girl who is truly a princess, whose mice become her footmen and whose goodness outshines every cruelty. Presented in the graceful translation of Charles Welsh, with a fresh, readable design and an original painting.
