About this edition

Drawn from a London drawing room to a lonely tower in the Scottish wilds, Maskull wakes alone on Tormance, the planet of the great star Arcturus, beneath twin suns and an alien sky. Sprouting new organs of sense as he travels, he crosses its ever-shifting landscapes and meets strange beings who each embody a different passion or philosophy, and each of whom, somehow, he must pass beyond.

David Lindsay’s A Voyage to Arcturus (1920) sold only a few hundred copies in his lifetime and was all but forgotten, yet it has become one of the strangest and most haunting visionary novels ever written: an acknowledged influence on C. S. Lewis, a favourite of the critic Harold Bloom, and a voyage less through space than through the masks of the self.

This edition presents Lindsay’s complete novel behind an original painting.
